It is a much quoted fact that over 1 billion people
in the world live on less than $1 a day, and yet the three richest
people in the world own assets that exceed the combined GDP of the
world's 48 poorest countries. This is not caused by short term emergencies,
but by long standing inequalities in global systems, past and present.
Organisations working to achieve social change
in global development look to strengthen people to find their own
solutions to the problems they face, and campaign against injustices
which reinforce the cycle of poverty in which they are trapped.
The link between the unsustainable use of
resources in the West and the devastating impact this is having
on the developing world is becoming an increasingly important part
of this campaign.
