As the ethnic and
cultural make-up of Britain grows ever more diverse, so do the problems
faced by members of these minority communities. Long standing residents
still find they suffer from prejudice through racism or cultural
misunderstandings, and the situation can be even worse for those
newly arrived. Their dream of safety and economic security is often
shattered by immediate incarceration and life on the poverty line.
Combating prejudice based on colour or ethnicity,
and campaigning for the dignity and rights of those who come to
Britain seeking shelter from harm, are key elements in the work
of refugee and minority organisations in the UK today.
