The United Nations
Declaration of human rights, published in 1947, stated that “…recognition
of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights
of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom,
justice and peace in the world.” To this end, there are organisations
striving to challenge prejudices that deny certain members of society
equal rights. These rights could be material, such as denying them
certain privileges or the right to work, or could relate more generally
to denying them the right to participate fully in society.
Equal rights can be broken down into a wide variety
of areas, but the main categories are human rights; civil rights;
women’s rights; men’s rights; children’s rights;
lesbian gay and bisexual (LGB) rights and disability rights. The
