Despite having the
4th largest economy in the world, life is bleak for many in our
country. A quarter of Britain’s population lives below the
national poverty line. They suffer not only from lower material
wealth but also lower education, health, life-expectancy, and employment
prospects.
Historically poor people were seen as being
responsible for their own situation. The last century has seen a
dramatic shift in understanding that much poverty is caused by societal
structures and institutions. Campaigning to ensure all citizens
can enjoy equal quality of life by tackling these underlying causes,
and the factors that keep people locked in to their situation, is
the focus of many poverty campaigners today.
